Oriental Shorthairs

The Siamese in Designer Genes

Oriental Shorthairs are among the most engaging, intelligent, and personality-driven cat breeds in the world. CFA describes them as "extremely bright" — they learn to walk on leashes, play fetch, and perform tricks. Breeders and owners consistently call them "dog-like" because they greet owners at the door, follow them room to room, ride on shoulders, and demand constant interaction.

Their vocality is legendary. They produce a distinctive honk (earning the nickname "honking cat"), along with chirps, raspy commentary, and persistent conversation about everything happening in the house. They are deeply sensitive cats that bond especially strongly with one person while remaining social with everyone.

Genetically identical to Siamese, the sole difference is the colorpoint gene — producing an astonishing 300+ color and pattern combinations compared to the Siamese's limited pointed palette. Males typically weigh 8-12 pounds, females under 8, and they typically live 12-15 years with some reaching 20+.

Serengeti Cats

All the Wild Beauty. None of the Wild Blood.

The Serengeti is one of the rarest domestic cat breeds on earth, with a total worldwide population estimated at only several hundred animals. Created in 1994 by conservation biologist Karen Sausman, the breed answers a provocative question: can you create a cat that looks like an African Serval without using any wild blood? The answer is yes — through crossing Bengal fathers with Oriental Shorthair mothers.

The result is a striking cat with the longest legs of any domestic breed — capable of jumping 7 feet in the air — wearing a spotted coat in gold, black, grey, or silver. Males weigh 10-15 pounds. Their large, round-tipped ears create the unmistakable silhouette of a wild African cat.

Nicknamed "Velcro cats" because they attach themselves to their owners, Serengetis are confident, social, vocal, and deeply affectionate. Unlike Savannah cats, they're legal everywhere — no state bans, no city restrictions, no exotic permits needed.

Why Serengeti Over Savannah?

Serengeti
  • 100% domestic blood
  • Legal everywhere
  • Predictable temperament
  • No exotic permits
  • Any vet can treat them
Savannah
  • Wild Serval blood
  • Banned in many areas
  • Unpredictable early gens
  • May need exotic permits
  • F1s can exceed $20,000

The Right Home for an Oriental

Oriental Shorthairs are not low-maintenance cats. They need:

  • A companion cat (ideally another Oriental or Siamese)
  • Someone home frequently (WFH ideal)
  • Daily interactive play
  • Cat trees and enrichment
  • Indoor-only environment
  • Patience for their vocal personalities
